Skarta Energy sells its share of the solar park at the Pyhäsalmi mine to Solarigo Systems

Skarta Energy sells its share of the solar park at the Pyhäsalmi mine to Solarigo Systems

Skarta Energy and Solarigo Systems have agreed that the ownership of the solar park at the Pyhäsalmi mine will be transferred to Solarigo Systems. The Callio solar park is a joint ownership project between Skarta Energy and Solarigo Systems, which was built on a decommissioned and filled tailings pond at the Pyhäsalmi mine. The solar park’s commercial electricity production started in June 2025. Skarta Energy has had a 70 per cent and Solarigo Systems 30 per cent ownership of the project company. The parties have agreed that the shares of the project company and the ownership of the solar park will be transferred in full to Solarigo Systems by the end of March 2026. In addition to the Callio solar park in Pyhäsalmi, the project company Callio-Hitura Solarpark Oy also owns the solar park project of the Hitura mine in Nivala.

Skarta Energy focuses on the development and production of renewable energy. The company specializes in emission-free industrial-scale solar power projects, complemented by energy storage solutions. In accordance with its updated strategy, Skarta Energy will mainly focus on projects over 50 MWp in areas with the highest levels of solar radiation.  The aim is to utilise areas that are easy to build and have lower nature values, such as unproductive or disused arable land or other wasteland.

"In line with our strategy, Skarta Energy will mainly focus on projects of more than 50 MWp in the future. The Callio solar park in Pyhäsalmi is 13 MWp in size and, based on its size, is better suited as an entity operated by a single operator. Callio was a good addition to Solarigo Systems' portfolio, so the decision was easy for both parties," says Mika Paloranta, CEO of Skarta Energy.

“We started developing the Callio solar power park in cooperation with Skarta, Callio Pyhäjärvi, the city of Pyhäjärvi and the mine in 2021. After the solar park is completed, Solarigo will continue the project with the implementation of the electricity storage facility and the responsibility for the operation of the solar park. The solar park with an electricity storage facility is a good fit for Solarigo’s existing portfolio,” says Antti Koskelainen, CEO of Solarigo Systems.

One of the goals of Callio’s project was to create the conditions for harnessing the decommissioned mining areas for solar power production. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has granted the project a Next Generations EU grant for the implementation of the project.

“The high electricity prices of the energy crisis have come down and electricity price forecasts have fallen. On the other hand, the price of construction has fallen significantly, making investments attractive. The biggest gold rush of the past is over, and project development has become more challenging. However, we have managed to quickly develop high-quality permitted project entities for our portfolio. We have several projects at different stages, which we develop mainly for ourselves, but also for sales,” Mika Paloranta continues.

Increasing the production of renewable electricity is necessary if we want to break away from fossil energy sources. Solar power is one of the lowest-emission, fastest and globally cheapest ways to increase the production of renewable electricity.
