Skarta Energy sells the Ohrasuo solar power project in Savonlinna to Suur-Savon Sähkö

Skarta Energy sells the Ohrasuo solar power project in Savonlinna to Suur-Savon Sähkö

Skarta Energy has agreed with Suur-Savon Sähkö Oy on the sale of the Ohrasuo solar power project in Savonlinna. Skarta Energy has been developing the project since 2023 and the project is sold fully licensed and ready for construction. The planned output of the solar power plant is 8.8 megawatts (MWp). The contract of sale was signed on 8 October 2025.

The development of the Ohrasuo solar park project began in 2023, when the City of Savonlinna and Skarta Energy signed a letter of intent for the project in June 2023. The project has been developed from the beginning in close cooperation with the City of Savonlinna. The land lease agreement was signed in September 2024. Now the project will be sold to Suur-Savon Sähkö’s subsidiary Järvi-Suomen Aurinko Oy fully licensed and ready for construction, and according to the buyer, the construction of the solar park will begin immediately. The plant is expected to be completed by the end of June 2026.

"I have had the opportunity to be involved in developing this project from the very beginning, and I am very pleased with the end result. I would like to thank all stakeholders involved in the project for our cooperation. Special thanks to the City of Savonlinna, which worked hard for the land reservation agreement back in the day. This made the project eligible for support," says Suvi Kyllönen, Project Manager at Skarta Energy, who was responsible for the Ohrasuo project.

The project has been granted RENEWFM support from the EU, which strengthens its economic viability.

“It’s great that we can make use of the support received from the EU. Savonlinna will get a solar power plant that will support local business and the green transition towards a more climate-resilient future,” Suvi continues.

The transfer of the Ohrasuo solar park in Savonlinna to Suur-Savon Sähkö is an excellent example of how clean energy investments are systematically taken forward. The project is an important part of the development of renewable energy production in the Savonlinna region and the long-term implementation of the energy transition.

"A positive solution has been found despite the challenging market situation, and it is an indication of good cooperation between Skarta Energy and the City of Savonlinna – the contribution of the city's technical department has played a key role in achieving a successful outcome," says Riku Wiitala, Business Services Manager at the City of Savonlinna.

“The major project groundwork will become concrete and we will get the first industrial-class solar park in Savonlinna. The cooperation between the technical department and the project company worked well thanks to Suvi, who acted as the project manager.  We hope to see you at the opening party,” continues Petra Junnila, Land Use Specialist at the City of Savonlinna.

In accordance with its updated strategy, Skarta Energy will mainly focus on projects with a capacity of more than 50 MWp in areas with the highest solar radiation levels.  The aim is to utilise areas that can be built well and have lower nature values, such as unproductive or disused arable land or other wasteland.

"We have been able to quickly develop high-quality licensed project entities for our portfolio. We have several projects in different stages that we are developing both for ourselves and for sales. We have been developing the Ohrasuo project for a long time. It is great that the project will be implemented and that Eastern Finland will finally have its own solar power plant," says Mika Paloranta, CEO of Skarta Energy.
