Skarta Energy’s Tornio solar park project receives EUR 4.2 million funding support from the European Commission

Skarta Energy’s Tornio solar park project receives EUR 4.2 million funding support from the European Commission

The European Commission has announced €52 million in funding support through the EU’s Renewable Energy Financing Mechanism (RENEWFM) for nine renewable energy projects in Finland and Estonia. In Finland, the support was granted to seven industrial-scale solar park projects, one of which was Skarta Energy’s solar park project in Laivakangas, Tornio.  The Laivakangas solar park project was granted EUR 4.2 million funding support.

Skarta Energy is planning a 60 MWp industrial-scale solar power plant in Tornio on an area of approximately 80 hectares. The letter of intent concerning the solar power plant was signed in May 2023 and the land lease agreement negotiations were concluded at the end of 2024. At the moment, a building permit is awaited for the project.

In accordance with the evaluation criteria of the RENEWFM, the project’s construction and grid connection permit processes must have been started, the project area must not be located in a forested area and the area must not be used for agriculture. In addition, the total capacity limit of 10–80 MWp must be met. The Laivakangas project in Tornio met the criteria.

"The location of the Laivakangas solar power plant in Tornio has been planned to be a soil extraction area that has already been partially decommissioned, so the project met the criteria for RENEWFM support excellently not only in terms of size but also in terms of location plans, and the support decision was positive for Skarta Energy," explains Aaro Hocksell, Project Manager at Skarta Energy.

The project is planned to be implemented with single-axis swivel panel racks, which will increase solar energy production and significantly improve the profitability of the power plant. The investment support now received will further strengthen profitability and is thus a significant factor when considering an investment decision.

The EU renewable energy financing mechanism (RENEWFM) was established by the Commission in 2020, aimed at better supporting renewable energy projects and encouraging a greater uptake of renewables across the EU. Of the EUR 40 million support package decided in November 2023, a total of approximately EUR 7 million in funding support was allocated to Skarta Energy’s solar park projects Koirivaara inTohmajärvi, Niittyneva in Nivala and Ohrasuo in Savonlinna. Thus, the Tornio solar park project is the fourth site of Skarta Energy’s projects to be granted RENEWFM support.
