The SBTi has approved Skarta Energy’s near-term science-based emissions reduction target

We are proud to announce that the SBTi has approved Skarta Energy’s near-term science-based emissions reduction target.

Skarta Energy commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions 42% by 2030 from a 2024 base year, and to measure and reduce its scope 3 emissions.

“This is an important achievement in our climate journey. It confirms that our emission reduction targets are aligned with climate science and reinforces our commitment to measurable, transparent and accountable emission reduction across our operations.” Anna Korhonen, HSEQ manager.

The latest climate science from the IPCC shows that it is still possible to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C, but we are dangerously close to that threshold. To achieve this target, rapid and effective actions are needed from all companies and industries worldwide. We feel that as a renewable energy producer, it is our duty to show the way to others in climate work. We also encourage all our stakeholders to align with climate science by committing to science-based 1.5°C and net-zero targets.

About the Science Based Targets initiative

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a corporate climate action organization that enables companies and financial institutions worldwide to play their part in combating the climate crisis.

The SBTi develops standards, tools and guidance which allow companies to set greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions targets in line with what is needed to keep global heating below catastrophic levels and reach net-zero by 2050 at latest.

The SBTi is incorporated as a charity, with a subsidiary which will host our target validation services. Their partners are CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the We Mean Business Coalition, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
